Bar Harbor is the gateway town to Acadia National Park, sitting on Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine. The town itself is small and walkable, but its real draw is what surrounds it: Acadia was one of the first national parks established east of the Mississippi, and its granite peaks, pine forests, and rocky Atlantic coastline pack an outsized amount of scenery into a relatively compact park.
Cadillac Mountain, at 1,530 feet, is the tallest peak on the US Atlantic coast, and from early October to early March, it's the first place in the United States to see the sunrise each day — a distinction that draws visitors well before dawn. Park Loop Road, a scenic 27-mile route through Acadia, connects most of the park's highlights, including Jordan Pond, where the historic Jordan Pond House has served its famous popovers with a view of the water and the twin peaks known as The Bubbles since the 19th century.

June through October brings Acadia's mildest weather and full access to Park Loop Road and hiking trails. Fall (late September–October) adds vivid foliage; much of the park's infrastructure closes or scales back in winter.
Downtown Bar Harbor is walkable, but Acadia National Park's main sights — Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, Park Loop Road — are spread across the park and best covered by vehicle, especially if timing a sunrise or an early Jordan Pond House visit.
Summers are mild (18–24°C / 64–75°F) but coastal weather changes quickly; layers and a windbreaker are worth having, especially at Cadillac Mountain's exposed summit, which is noticeably cooler and windier than the coast below.
From early October to early March, Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the continental US to see the sunrise — arriving well before dawn (and dressing warmly) is essential if that's a priority.
